At Coverings 2008, the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF) launched the Certified Tile Installer (CTI) program designed to provide benefits to both the tile installer and the consumer. The CTI distinction allows the installer to be differentiated from others in the field. This raises the certified installer to the level of a tile professional with credentials while also making the consumer’s decision much easier. The two-day CTI program includes a rigorous one and a half day hands-on exam and a 155 question open book written test. The hands-on exam constitutes 75% of the total score, while the written exam is 25%. The minimum passing grade is 85%, which assures only higher quality installers will receive the privilege of being a Certified Tile Installer. This year, the schedule is loaded with regional sites across the U.S. which allow the tile contractor to select a site close to his or her location, thus saving travel and hotel costs.
